Public Talk

"Building Peace, One Life at a Time"

When faced with the complex and painful world situation, it might seem hopeless – that the world and its inhabitants are caught in an inescapable web of conflict and suffering. When we consider the state of the world and all its conflicts, it might seem like peace is an unattainable goal. But the great masters of the Buddhist tradition, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, are hopeful that we can achieve peace "one life at a time" by practicing love and compassion. This talk will describe the path to peace as taught by the Buddha, with some practical instructions on how we can bring peace to our own lives and homes.

There will be time for questions and discussion.

Weekend Teaching - Saturday

"Seven Points of Mind Training"

The Seven Points of Mind Training provides a condensed, yet complete practice which includes methods to challenge our self-centered patterns of thinking and acting, to decrease our sense of self-importance and self-righteousness, and to instead put the welfare of others ahead of our own ego-cherishing behaviors. An important feature of this practice is how it can be done throughout the day as we cultivate an attitude of "sending" positive thought and action to others at work and at home.

These timeless teachings of "mind training" (lojong) and "taking and sending" (tonglen) were brought by Atisha to Tibet in the 11th century and yet, they are amazingly relevant in these modern times. Anger, attachment and ignorance -- the "Three Poisions" which the Buddha said were the cause of continuous suffering in the world -- are emotions we experience every day. How can we train our minds so that the Three Poisons do not defeat us? Lama Kathy will show us how to apply this practice in our in our daily lives.

All beings who are alive today will inevitably face the suffering and pain of death. No matter what our social standing or how many possessions and friends surround us, we all must come to terms with our mortality and discover how to live meaningful lives of benefit to ourselves and others.
