Our Meditation Practices consist of
- Sitting Meditation:
Sitting meditation, which is sometimes refered to as "calm abiding"
meditation, is scheduled from 11:15 a.m. to 11:45 noon on Sundays. Its
technical name is shinay or shamata. In this practice the meditator
sits quietly in a comfortable position and follows the breath while
calming the mind. This practice is fundamental at all levels of study
as it develops the capacity of the mind to focus and help acheive the
necessary calmness of mind to practice the Dharma. Instruction is
readily available upon request.
- Prayers and Sadhana Practice:
We participate in several group meditation practices that involve
chanting (in Tibetan), visualization, repetition of mantras, and
prayers. Few of us are able to read and speak Tibetan, but we have a
transliteration that makes it very easy to follow along and
participate. There is also an English translation so that you can
follow along with the meaning of the words. The purpose of these
practices is to develop compassion and wisdom.
- This
practice is held from 10 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. every Sunday.
- Our
group practices are open to beginners. Instruction is available with
advance notice.
- For
more details visit this introduction to Tibetan Buddhism [details].
- Refuge
is not required to participate in these practices
